KoF Live: The PUMA IGNITE Evoknit Trifecta Of Unboxings (Video)

Performance and lifestyle used to be two separate categories in the footwear world. There are still shoes obviously made just to be worn on the field, the court, or the track, just as there are shoes only made for the boardroom, the streets, or the club, but for the discerning sneakerhead that is knee-deep in the culture, they want the sneaker that is stylish for the physical and casual activity. Plenty of brands have tried to chase that magical pair that appeals to all for years to varying degrees of success. PUMA appears to have found it with the PUMA IGNITE Evoknit.

As one of the main sponsors of Complexcon that included a pretty wide space that was also in partnership with Foot Locker and an endorsement deal with The Weeknd, it’s clear that PUMA believes in the silhouette. Talking with Jeff Staple at the show gave me some more insight as to what the IGNITE Evoknit as the potential to become for PUMA and between Staple’s pair and the future of the shoe sans ankle collar, it will be a 2017 to watch for the sneaker.

But before we head into next year, here’s a look back at the various pairs of IGNIT Evoknits we have received in the past few months at the KoF Offices, including one from Complexcon.

After dropping some 1-to-1 reproductions of the shoe in original colors earlier this year, PUMA is back this fall with another special release honoring the iconic Clyde. Walt Frazier’s landmark signature hoops shoe now appears in a fitting orange suede upper with royal blue accents, a reference to the New York Knicks who he helped lead to two NBA championships in his tenure with the team. The high-quality take on the Clyde features special details like Frazier’s #10 in gold foil on each heel and special attention to accuracy on the overall shape of the shoe to match the original version from the 1970’s. Both pairs of the Puma R698 are constructed out of a combination of smooth, perforated and tumbled leather. Creating some material contrast are the hits of suede that help give the shoes even more of a premium motif. Additional features on the shoe include the metallic stars noted on the speckled panel near the pink Puma branding on the heel. More Pink hits are found on the Trinomic midsole cushion system while an icy blue outsole is placed below. Dropping tomorrow at PHANTACi, which pair are you feeling the most?

Really nice, the only thing I could do without would be the stars on the heel, aside from that, the materials used on the shoe are really dope.

COOGI Puts Their Signature Print On The Puma Clyde

COOGI X PUMA CLYDE PACK 1 COOGI X PUMA CLYDE PACK 2 COOGI X PUMA CLYDE PACK 3

Puma unveiled some of their upcoming collaborations this past weekend at Complex Con with one of them has them joining forces with Australian knitwear brand COOGI.

Utilizing the Puma Clyde as their canvas, COOGI has designed two colorways of the simple and classic sneaker. The first features their signature colorful print all throughout the knitted upper with Black detailing on the Puma formstripe, laces, inner liner, and heel tab. The second pair is a reverse version of the first as the majority of the shoe is done in black suede with COOGI’s colorful print landing on the Puma stripe and inner liner. A cool thing about this sneaker is that no two shoes in the collection are the same as they all have a different pattern.

You can look for the COOGI x Puma Clyde Pack to release some time in the Spring of 2017.

Interview: Jeff Staple Previews PUMA Collaboration, Future Of The Culture

“So Marc Ecko came up to me [Friday] and he gave me the biggest hug. I was just gonna give him a pound, but he gave me a full one-minute long man hug and he was like just ‘thank you for believing in this vision that all of us can come together and show the world what we’re about.'” – Jeff Staple

That was ComplexCon in a nutshell, succinctly captured by Jeff Staple. Who could have guessed in the early 2000s that a print magazine Marc Ecko developed would grow and become this global icon for “the culture” that we’re now holding a weekend-long event celebrating it in front of thousands of people young and old? But here we are talking to Staple through PUMA but not at a separate locale detached from the rest of the world, but in a crowded Long Beach Convention Center full of energy and excitement.

PUMA has been on the uptick lately thanks to some recent releases that have captured the attention of sneakerheads both hardcore and casual such as the IGNITE EVOknit and the reemergence of the iconic Clyde, not to mention their partnerships with Foot Locker – who partnered up with PUMA for their ComplexCon booth – and style icons Rihanna and Kylie Jenner. Staple’s contribution to PUMA’s resurgence this year was a well-received Pigeon-themed Suede and Blaze of Glory. 2017 will yield yet another collaborative effort between the two as we can expect the IGNITE EVOknit, the Clyde and more to get Pigeon treatment but not necessarily in the way you might expect.

We talked to Staple and PUMA’s Global Senior Head of Lifestyle Yassine Saidi about their relationship through the years, their excitement for what’s to come in 2017 and the state of “the culture” in general and where it’s headed.

PUMA
PUMA

On this upcoming (2017) collaboration:

Jeff: So when we embarked on the talk of the third time, what were we gonna do that was different from the first two, which was very sneakerhead-centric, so I wanted to come out with something that was more performance and lifestyle-driven. I guess more adult, if you will. The first two you could say was made for the hypebeast and that’s not a derogatory thing because I’m a hypebeast too, but I think there’s a lot of people that have other aspects to their life besides shoes. They have jobs and meetings and husbands and wives and kids, you know? So this collection really represents all of the other things that you go through in life.

Yassine: So we activate what [models] we’re going to use based on the story and theme. So Jeff came up with the concept, mixing style and performance, then we had a set of products that we choose from and we settled on which on we were going to use.

Jeff: But [the EVOknit] wasn’t invented yet when we first started talking about [2017]. So we were already about 25% of the way into the lineup, and then they were ‘hey, check this out’ at the last minute.

When I mentioned that while I like the EVOknit, I wish the collar wasn’t there…

Jeff: We should do a pair where there’s a zipper for your ankles, so you can breathe a little bit. When I eat salty foods my ankles get big too (laughs). But comfort was the number one thing, but the other reason I like this shoe is because I travel a lot and you know you got to take your shoes off when you pass through TSA so these slip on and off real easy.

PUMA
PUMA

On whether it had to be Pigeon style (grey and shades of pink)…

Jeff: So this is one delivery of the collection, the next delivery is monochromatic black and 3M Reflective (note: my brain exploded hearing that).  So there are two colorways coming. This “Pigeonified” colorway was requested by PUMA to link back to our heritage and lineage. And to answer your question of whether we would want to do a whole new colorway, it’s like, why? We own it, you know? Every time another company or another brand “accidentally” releases in this color scheme, they get called out. I don’t even have to police it. People are telling me [that someone is copying his scheme]. It’s like I have my own traffic cops and that’s cool.

The power behind that [is amazing]. I feel so blessed that people own that vocabulary and the crazy thing is that it’s just shades of grey, white and pink. It’s not some crazy flourescent or teal kind of s**t, it’s the combination that’s the owning of it. Like sometimes I can’t believe that others can’t do that style without getting called out. It’s not my fault, but that is the case.

What PUMA brought to the table was that we didn’t have this colorway initially in the collection but they emphasized that. I was sort of like I didn’t want to rest on my laurels but they emphasized that you own something here and people do expect that and you should bring it in and they had to some convincing with me to make it happen.

On how this new collection is different from previous Staple collaborations…

Yassine: From this starting point, we were not going to have the pigeon on the shoe. So there’s two things [symbolic of the Pigeon style], and that’s the pigeon and the grey and pink. So that way we can introduce this as a Staple with the grey and the pink but then also release it in other colorways without having it tied to the pigeon.

Jeff: And there’s not a lot of brands that just have a color branding. And the fact that we just came off an actual Pigeon collaboration (which might take away from the specificity of the Pigeon brand).

On ComplexCon and the future…

Jeff: It’s amazing, I have to check myself constantly because we’re always doing trade shows and I have to remind myself that [the people] here are not industry people. These are kids, consumers, bought a ticket to experience this all. We’re honestly kind of jaded because this is our job 24/7 and 365. And it’s not just the big booths. There’s the 10×10 [booth space] guy in the back that’s got a lot of people excited.

Yassine: And for a brand like us, as Jeff said, we are trade shows. We are talking to accounts and stores like Foot Locker. We don’t get to talk to the people and now with this, there’s a connection which is unique. It’s a special platform, it really is.
