Back in November 2012, Jordan Brand released a new Air Jordan 1 in a very topical red, white and blue colorway. Dubbed the Air Jordan 1 Election Day for its on the nose inspiration and the fact that it featured a Blue Donkey and a Red Elephant for insoles, the shoe would have been the perfect pair to wear on the eponymous day if only it hadn’t released nearly a week later instead of days before the country decided they wanted four more years of President Barack Obama. I ended up wearing the Nike Air Force 180 Mid Olympic in 2012 because back then Charles Barkley hadn’t turned full problematic curmudgeon yet.
While there was mild interest for the shoe thanks to interest in the Presidential Election and the solid color scheme prior to dropping, few predicted it would become something of a sneaker cult classic. Despite being a general release that lacked the requisite “Nike Air” branding that’s needed for anybody to give a crap about an Air Jordan 1 drop these days, the shoes sold rather briskly and are still reselling for a minimum of $200 in the secondary market. All things considered, that’s quite the accomplishment for a…

Ok, now that I’ve got that out of the way, let’s get to the real reason behind this post. You need to vote. Yes, you who are reading this and are old enough (and have registered) to make a difference in the direction this country will take in the next few years. I thank you for reading Kicks On Fire and I thank you even more if you’ve been with me on this journey of writing almost non-stop for the past several years. But today, you have a responsibility to yourself and your country (if you live in another country, thanks for reading, and please, stop laughing at how much of a s**tshow our electoral process has become) to vote for your next President and for everything down the ballot that could personally affect you on a local level.
In an election season that has been vile, disgusting and just downright awful, the only way this would have been all worth it is if everybody went out there and had their voice be heard when it actually mattered. We can argue on Twitter and post memes with erroneous information to our heart’s content, but it won’t mean a thing if we don’t actually take the time to cast our ballot. I voted early for the first time ever and, minus the time it took to research the various measures, it took me longer to wait on a Saturday morning to find out I missed out on yet another Air Jordan 12 or Yeezy 350 drop than it took me to draw a line to my choice.
Here’s the thing; I don’t care who you vote for, but you have to do it. Ok, that’s a lie; I do care who you’re voting for because holy crap you can’t seriously be voting for ____, but it’s important to me that you all vote. Because if we can come together at a place like ComplexCon this past weekend and not act like the buffoons that we sometimes often times portray ourselves on social media, than we can do the same on Election Day with higher stakes and accept whoever wins or loses.
Besides, this will be the perfect opportunity to finally undeadstock those Air Jordan 1 Election Day kicks since you didn’t get to do last time. Just be sure to tag us (@kicksonfire on Twitter and Instagram) so we can find it down the road.
