The Nike Doernbecher Freestyle XIX Collection has been officially unveiled. For those why may not know, the Nike Doernbecher Freestyle Collection is an annual collection between Nike and the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital that consists of sneakers and apparel designed by young patients in the aforementioned hospital. Since 2004, Nike has teamed up with OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for this Doernbecher Freestyle initiative. Every year, Nike Employee Design volunteers collaborate with a select few OHSU Doernbecher patients to create one of a kind designs in footwear, apparel and equipment.
The Nike Doernbecher Freestyle XIX Collection will include the following six model: the Air Jordan 3, Nike Air Max 1 ?86, Nike Dunk High, Nike Cortez, Nike Go FlyEase, and the Nike ACG Mountain Fly 2 Low. Yet to be unveiled, these special iterations of each model not only represent style and innovation but also embody the spirit of resilience and hope. What makes this yearly collection even more special is the fact that all profits generated from the sales will go directly to benefit the OHSU Doernbecher Children?s Hospital. By doing this, it allows the hospital leaders to have the flexibility to allocate resources precisely when and where they are needed the most.

UPDATE (10/30): Nike has officially unveiled their Nike Doernbecher Freestyle XIX Collection. This year’s participants from the collection will include a dedicated swimmer, a talented cookie artisan, a genuine Pacific Northwesterner, a young girl with a ?remarkable heart,? a chain collector with impeccable style, and an exceptionally bright individual. Look for the entire Nike Doernbecher Freestyle XIX Collection to make its debut sometime during the month of December.
Here is a quick breakdown of each special pair from this unique collection.
Name: Hugo Covarrubias Molina
Age: 14
Diagnosis: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome
Shoe: Air Jordan III

Hugo ?Juice? Covarrubias Molina was born with a rare disorder that causes one side of his body to grow larger than the other. He used to feel self-conscious about it, but Hugo has learned to embrace his uniqueness and designed a shoe that encourages others to do the same. His style is represented on the shoe with his nickname, ?Juice? (?Jugo? in Spanish), and a cool drip design over the upper. On the outsole you?ll find his words to live by: It?s OK to be different.
Hugo?s Air Jordan III. Hugo?s handwritten catchphrase, ?It’s OK to be different,? appears through the green, transparent outsole.
The green and blue matches the jersey of his favorite football team, the Seattle Seahawks. Hugo?s love of gold chains led to his own gold-plated hangtag, which can also be used as a pendent on a necklace. On the inner tongue are woven patches: one side lists his heroes, his mom and dad, while the other is purposefully blank for the wearer to name their own heroes.
The transparent heel tab reveals Hugo?s logo, with the Jumpman placed above Hugo?s nickname, ?Juice.?
Hugo?s overflowing sense of style is represented by a green drip pattern ? accented by green patent leather on the tongue and quarter overlay.
The shoe?s laces have glow-in-the-dark flecks.

Hailey has had five surgeries to fix the valves of her heart, so she honored her medical journey with a special heart-inspired shoe. The logo on the tongue and sock liner is an exact replica of her one-of-a-kind heart, while shiny gold accents reflect her sparkly personality. Added bonus: Hailey turned some of her favorite things (like ice cream and rainbows) into mix-and-match charms that you can wear on the shoe or as a bracelet.
Hailey?s Air Max 1 ?86. Five hearts are hand-drawn by Hailey on the toe box, representing each member of her family.
A detachable bracelet with 10 charms representing Hailey?s favorite things pays homage to her love of customizable dolls. The squiggly lines on the midsole and laces are drawn by Hailey, representing the calm of ocean waves.
The anatomical heart logo on the tongue was drawn by Hailey?s doctor to explain the surgery process for what Hailey?s mom calls her ?very special heart.?

?She believed she could so she did.? That phrase guides Macey Bodily in everything she does, so she made sure to give it a place of honor on her flower-powered shoe. As for the grey ribbon on the upper, that?s to represent her status as a brain cancer survivor. This determined young lady loves baking and has a sweet surprise for you: Inside her shoe, you?ll find the recipe to her famous chocolate chip cookies.
Macey?s Nike Dunk High. The floral pattern was hand-painted by Macey and repeated in an allover print on the upper.
The phrase on the midsole, ?She believed she could so she did,? is a family mantra that speaks to Macey?s strength and courage.
The grey ribbon symbol on the upper denotes Macey?s status as a brain cancer survivor.
Macey?s favorite dessert, a chocolate chip cookie, appears on the tongue graphic.
Peek at the inner tongue and you?ll see Macey?s delicious cookie recipe, which also appears on a card that comes with the shoes.

Sydney Little is a talented artist and competitive swimmer who refuses to let her arthritis pain slow her down. Her design is a walking masterpiece filled with her hand-drawn artwork and features interchangeable elements so you can wear it your way. Sydney hopes her vibrant shoe will brighten your day and has a bit of advice for anyone facing a challenge: ?Keep swimming,? she says, ?you?ll get through it.?

The heel uses a hook-and-loop material, with multiple patches hand-drawn by Sydney. Sydney?s heart-shaped logo appears throughout the shoe and was collaboratively drawn by Sydney and her team.
On the outsole, glow-in-the-dark lines mimic the pattern of a water reflection within a pool.
Sydney chose a squishy glow-in-the-dark Swoosh for her Cortez as a nod to her love of water.

Chris Musquiz Jr. was riding his bike to school one morning when he was struck by a car and critically injured. While he lost his leg in the accident, Chris never lost his courage or positivity. His shoe reflects his love of Japanese culture and features a kimono-inspired wrap design and a cool graphic of Mt. Fuji on the tongue. One pound, seven ounces: that?s how much Garrett Amerson weighed when he was born 15 weeks early. Twelve years later, that tiny, tenacious baby has grown into a thriving teen who loves science, plays chess and collects historic hats. Garrett?s shoe is an ode to the Pacific Northwest, with trees, mountains, and a waterfall cascading down the tongue. He even added realistic mud splatters so you never have to worry about getting it dirty.
Garrett’s Nike ACG Mountain Fly 2 Low. The tree landscape and sheath of textured rock on the upper are an ode to Garrett?s Pacific Northwest roots, with the blue waterfall tongue adding to the hiking aesthetic.
Three shades of brown are splattered on the midsole and outsole to look like hiking mud, with the midsole splatters textured like dried mud.
The upper features a translucent material with cloud outlines and a second layer of trees when seen up close.
The purple butterfly, also found on the right sock liner, is a nod to Garrett?s twin brother, who lost his life in the NICU.
