adidas Originals and United Arrows & Sons will be releasing anew capsule collection that’s said to be inspired by the iconic styles of 80s hip-hop. Just like past adidas Originals and United Arrows & Sons collabs, this capsule is also built around a reimagining of the adidas trefoil logo by a renowned Japanese artist
For their second team-up of 2018, adidas and the iconic Japanese retailer/brand United Arrows & Sons channel the era of the four elements: b-boys and graffiti; MC-ing and turntablism. At the heart of the capsule is a new take on the adidas trefoil logo, created by the infamous graffiti artist WANTO. His distinctive style connects the dots between hip-hop?s New York birthplace and the contemporary Tokyo that UA & SONS calls home. WANTO?s trefoil recalls the subway-bombing graffiti of his NYC forebears ? painted by hand, smudged at the edges and with a DIY feel to it… yet just as triumphant and defiant as the hip-hop artists who took the original to heart.
The WANTO trefoil appears across the entire collection of footwear, apparel and accessories, offsetting the refined silhouettes and progressive details that are also synonymous with United Arrows & Sons. The Ultra Star and Rivalry Lo were classic footwear styles of the scene in their original iterations and they are updated here to both maximize their hip-hop credentials and introduce contemporary elements. The Rivalry Lo features Italian snakeskin-printed leather detailing, flat laces and an all-black backdrop for WANTO?s graphic.
The Ultra Star meanwhile, maintains the shelltoe and silhouette that became synonymous with 80s hip hop, but otherwise modernizes the style with advanced materials such as knitted uppers and a Boost midsole. At the fore of the apparel offering stand two pieces of outerwear: a long jacket inspired by a classic Chester coat that features an all-over jacquard print of WANTO?s graphics and contrasting three-stripe detailing; a classic varsity jacket with cow leather sleeves and oversized, co-branded WANTO?s graphics stitched to the chest. Also featured are two tracksuits that apply classic colorways of the era to modern, oversized tops and more fitted bottoms. The most vibrant graphics are applied to a pair of oversized knitted tops, with WANTO?s retro graphics brought into the 21st century through the use of a special knit technology. The same technology is applied to accessories in the form of a beanie, which rounds out the capsule with a knitted depiction of the New York skyline on its reverse.
adidas x United Arrows & Sons will be available for purchase on 25th August.
